This year’s annual ATLAS Africa Honours 2024 student webinar will focus on the topic “More Than Just a Tour”.

UPCT is the University of Pretoria Campus Tours, a postgraduate, live project, experiential teaching model in which the honours students run a real-time tourism business. Throughout the year, the students who operate UPCT learn transferable soft and hard skills, as well as all the aspects of operating a business including: finance, marketing, events planning and management, administration, research and guiding skills.

This year’s UP webinar will explore how UP Campus Tours is more than just a tourist guiding business. It will explore the additional attributes it offers the students as regards confidence, cultural awareness, conflict resolution, problem solving, teamwork, creative initiative and organizational abilities. Moreover, to counter the negative criticism of tourism apparent in a post-Covid world – over tourism, displacement of locals, carbon footprint, loss of indigenous identity – the webinar will reflect on UPCT as a microcosm of what the tourist guiding landscape can offer to broader society. It will consider how tourism can connect people from diverse backgrounds, highlight a sense of belonging, address issues of stereotyping and xenophobia and create a greater awareness of the green economy. In essence, the webinar contends that tourism can bridge divides, foster unity, bolster understanding and promote environmental concerns.

Attending this event is for free for both ATLAS members and non-members.
